More like a turtle! Considering its current layout, it resembles a turtle. A stone castle was built on the castle grounds starting in 1248, which served to protect the papacy founded by our first Hungarian king, Saint Stephen, between 1001 and 1009. A cathedral was built on the castle hill in Gothic and later Late Gothic styles to replace the destroyed Romanesque church. The castle expanded continuously in the following centuries, underwent several metamorphoses according to the needs, and grew into a “turtle’s nest”. The most famous historical event associated with it is the siege of 1552, when the castle guards, under the command of Captain István Dobó, repelled the superior army of the Ottoman Empire. The heroic stand was preserved in Géza Gárdonyi's historical novel, The Stars of Eger.

I have to say it! The cult is yours! We can experience the exciting battle not only in books, as the Végvári Consolations are held every year. During the interactive siege game, nearly 150 knights will reenact scenes from the glorious defense of 1552 and the famous novel The Stars of Eger! In addition, the permanent The exhibitions present the history of the castle, the Prison Museum is captivating, we can investigate in the Dungeon, the underground fortress system of the castle, we can admire the stars of Eger in the Heroes' Room, and in the Eger Picture Gallery you can see a collection of Hungarian, non-metal, Italian and Austrian paintings.

What does the castle have to do with peas and bull's blood?

There was certainly no shortage of brassos, but the peas were used as radar against the Turks. After the repulsed siege, Dobó He expected that the Turks would dig mines to blow up the wall, so he put peas on the drums, which, when they started to vibrate, would indicate that the Turks were digging.
So, what about the bull's blood? According to legend, during the siege of 1552, the heroic Egrians seemed to be weakening in their fight against the Turks. At that time, the castle captain, Dobó Stephen opened the castle cellars and distributed wine, then they attacked the enemy with great vigor. The dew stained the beards and armor of the castle guards with blood. The news spread among the Turks that the Hungarians drank bull's blood and that's why they were so strong.

At 15:52, remember Dob&O and the siege!
Every day until the end of the tourist season, at 15:52, a beautiful horse will thunder from the Eger Castle's Sluice Gate to announce the glory of the 1552 victory. It could also be a kind of invitation to visit the 1552 Restaurant and the Amulett Bar, seasoning the experiences offered by the city with a little culinary delight.

Something was recently discovered that has been found in many cases in Europe, but has never been seen before in Hungary! This is none other than the Romanesque cloister of the cathedral.
